What Remote Mode Is
Remote Mode connects two iPhones for live, bidirectional voice translation over any internet connection. One person generates a 6-digit code inside Puente and shares it. The other person enters that code in their copy of the app. Both devices join a shared translation session — each person speaks in their language, and each hears the other translated in real time.
No accounts. No usernames. No links to click. A six-digit number is the entire setup process.
Why a 6-Digit Code Approach
The design choice here is deliberate. Most “remote” translation solutions require both parties to be logged into the same platform, to share contact details, or to install the same app with matching credentials. That creates friction that matters enormously in the real-world contexts where remote translation is needed.
A doctor on a telehealth call with a patient who speaks a different language can’t ask the patient to “create an account and log in to a platform” before the appointment starts. A family separated by immigration can’t coordinate through a system that requires both sides to be registered users. A business negotiation across two countries shouldn’t depend on both parties using the same enterprise software stack.
The 6-digit code requires only that both parties have the app installed and that one of them can communicate a number — by text, email, phone call, or in-app share.
Setting Up a Remote Mode Session
On the host device:
- Open Puente and tap the mode selector
- Select Remote
- Puente generates a 6-digit code and displays it prominently
- Set your language in the host language slot
- Share the code with the other person via text, email, or voice
On the joining device:
- Open Puente and tap Join Session
- Enter the 6-digit code
- Set your language
- Tap Join
Both devices now show an active session indicator. Each person speaks normally and hears the other person’s words translated in real time.
How It Compares to Alternatives
Google Translate (phone): Google’s conversation mode requires both parties to tap a microphone button to take turns. It’s sequential — one speaks, the other reads or listens, then the other taps to respond. It’s a functional workaround, not a real-time conversation. It also requires both parties to be looking at the same phone or to have coordinated which app they’re using.
Apple Translate (FaceTime): Apple’s built-in translation in FaceTime is limited to Apple-to-Apple calls and a small set of languages. It doesn’t work with Android users or on regular phone calls.
Human interpreter services: Remote interpreter services exist (telephone or video), but they require scheduling, cost per-minute fees, and often don’t handle rare language pairs. They’re the right solution for high-stakes certified interpretation (immigration court, medical informed consent), but impractical for spontaneous or frequent communication.

The buyer generates a Remote Mode code and sends it to the supplier contact. The supplier enters it. The Korean-speaking supplier speaks Korean; the Spanish-speaking buyer speaks Spanish.
