Why Offline Translation Matters
The situations where translation is most urgent are often the situations with the worst internet connectivity.
A hospital basement imaging department. A construction site in a rural area without cell coverage. A disaster zone where towers are down. An airplane at 35,000 feet. In all of these settings, a translation app that requires a server round-trip simply doesn’t work. And in all of these settings, communication failures have real consequences.

Offline support covers the eight languages that account for the majority of global translation needs:

Any combination of these eight works offline: Spanish ↔ French, German ↔ Japanese, Mandarin ↔ Portuguese, and so on. For the other 101 languages Puente supports, an internet connection is required.
How Whisper AI Works On-Device
Whisper is OpenAI’s speech recognition model. Puente ships a version of Whisper that runs entirely on the iPhone’s Neural Engine — the dedicated hardware in Apple’s chips that handles machine learning inference without sending data to a server.
When you speak, the audio is captured by the iPhone microphone, processed locally by the Whisper model, converted to text, translated, and played back as synthesized speech. The entire pipeline completes on the device. Nothing leaves your phone.
This has two significant implications. First, there is no latency from a server round-trip — offline translation in Puente is often perceptibly faster than the online version for short phrases, because there’s no network wait. Second, your audio is never transmitted anywhere. What is said stays on the device.
Getting Offline Languages Ready
After installing Puente, offline language models download automatically when your phone is on Wi-Fi and charging. You can check download status in Settings → Offline Languages. If you know you’ll be in a low-connectivity situation, trigger manual downloads in advance to ensure all eight models are fully available.
When the app detects that no internet connection is available, it automatically falls back to offline mode for supported language pairs. You don’t have to switch manually — the transition is seamless. The mode indicator in the app will show “Offline” when this fallback is active.
Hospital Basement Scenario
Imaging departments, pathology labs, and basement procedure rooms in hospitals frequently have weak or no cellular signal, and some hospital policies block personal devices from the Wi-Fi network. A nurse or technologist needing to communicate with a non-English-speaking patient in these environments has historically had limited options: find a human interpreter, call the language line (which requires a functioning call connection), or proceed with inadequate communication.
With Puente offline mode running on their iPhone, the care team member doesn’t need any network connection. Spanish, Mandarin, and French — three of the most common non-English languages in U.S. healthcare settings — are all in the offline set. The conversation happens, the patient understands the procedure, and HIPAA-aligned audio privacy is maintained because nothing is transmitted.
Construction Site Scenario
Remote construction sites — pipeline infrastructure, utility work, mining — frequently operate in areas with no reliable cell signal. Safety communications that fail to reach non-English-speaking workers aren’t just an equity issue; they’re a liability exposure and a genuine hazard.

In the aftermath of a hurricane, earthquake, or major flood, cell infrastructure is often the first thing to fail. Emergency responders — paramedics, fire crews, National Guard, FEMA teams — frequently work in zero-connectivity environments.
